REFRACTIVE INDEX 1.603 - 1.655 MINERAL CLASS Tourmaline Tourmaline is a very special family of gemstones..and are beautiful gemstones which come in every color that one can think of - pink, deep pink, peach, red, green, dark green, purple red, blue, blue green, brownish green, yellow, black, bi colored, colorless and even in multi-colors - half pink and half green called parti-colored tourmaline.
The name tourmaline comes from the Singhalese words (native language in Sri Lanka) 'tura mali'. this means something like 'stone with mixed colours', referring to the colour spectrum of this gemstone.
Tourmalines are found in almost all over the world. But major deposits are in Sri Lanka, Brazil and south-west Africa. Also, finds have been made in Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Madagascar, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Certain kinds of tourmaline are very rare and expensive, such as the Paraiba tourmaline found in Brazil, while others are common and affordable. Tourmalines that come in very saturated colors of hot pink, magenta and red.are called rubelites, and they are among the most prized tourmalines.
